Social Work
Overview
Social Work is a practice-based profession that assists individuals, groups, or communities to restore or enhance their capacity for social functioning. Social work involves the understanding of human development, behavior and the social, economic and cultural institutions and interactions. Social workers are highly trained and experienced professionals.
They work in every facet of community life, particularly focusing on individuals who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty. Social workers support clients who are living with disabilities, substance abuse problems, or experience domestic conflicts.
Depending on their specialty, job title and place of employment, a social worker may be required to have different levels of education. Only those who have earned social work degrees at the bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral levels, and completed a minimum number of hours in supervised fieldwork, are considered “professional social workers.â€
