RAYMOND – Decisions about life after high school can be quite intimidating, like Ashlee Sowell found out when she was in that position.

“I chose Hinds because I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life,” Sowell said.  “And it was a good way to get the basic courses out of the way for an affordable price.”

Sowell, of Benton, is pursuing a career in accounting and plans to transfer this fall to Mississippi College. Along the way of a successful run at Hinds, Sowell was recognized for her achievement by being named among 28 students given 3E awards for spring 2020. The designation stands for Emphasis on Excellence and Enrichment and the student must carry a 3.5 GPA or higher.

She was also among those named Who’s Who Among Hinds students. She was also an officer in Honors Forum and Phi Theta Kappa on the Raymond Campus.

Along with the rest of the student body at Hinds, she had her classes switched to online instruction after campuses closed in March amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“I have had a great experience at Hinds, and I’m upset that I have to finish my last semester off- campus,” she said. “The transition to going online hasn’t been terrible, but all my instructors have tried hard to make the transition easy. My calculus instructor, Hun Finley, really helped me this semester.”
